I have another machinery project to work on – a Boswells of Blairgowrie turnip harvester.
I had been looking for one for a long time, and these things are becoming even more difficult to find, never mind finding one in good condition.
This one is in rough condition, although the framework is good, and the function of the two toppers, the cutting disc, the depth wheel mechanism and the lifting wheel are all good which is great.
The fact that it is an original Boswells of Blairgowrie harvester is also a big plus as these were among the first to be made and they’re getting harder and harder to find now.
The points which need attention are:
- The elevator needs to be straightened slightly and a new cross member made and welded in
- A few of the chain link elevator sections are broken and need to be replaced or welded.
- The cutting disc at the rear needs to be replaced – it is rotten and has bits welded everywhere.
- The top cover/ belt guard is dented and botched – I will make a better one.
- The adjustable depth wheel is rotten and the left wheel is missing – I will find better ones and fit them.
That sounds like a lot, but it will be in great condition when I’m finished with it.
The first thing I did was remove the top cover, the side elevator and the elevator chain, and then I covered everything in oil, allowing it to soak into all those parts which have been dry and rusted.
I will fix the side elevator first, then I will work on the rest of the machine.
More updates in the future..
