rodding drains in the field

Rodding land drains

Today we were rodding drains in a field which will be planted in potatoes.

Rodding the drains – notice the cut ends on the ditch.

The field has been drained before but over time the ends of the pipes get tramped on and roots grow into the drainage pipe causing it to block.

The field needs its drains cleared in places.

The crushed end of the pipe is cut off and a sewer rod with a twisted end is pushed up the drainage pipe where it will usually meet resistance at the blocked part – after rodding it backwards and forwards a while, a blast of water trapped in the pipe will come out.

My uncle’s Massey Ferguson 50B digger was used to locate the drainage pipe, which saved digging with a spade.
