Yesterday I decided to spray the moss which was growing on the beds in the swede field with iron sulphate.
Iron sulphate is a blue fine powder which is usually spread on grass to kill moss, although it is highly soluble in water also.
I checked the bag and it recommended applying 20kg per 600 litres of water, which covers a hectare.
It was mainly the bottom of the field I needed to apply it to, but I did the full field and just went slower at the bottom end.
Although the ground could have been drier, there was no wind and it was dry all day.
After I had applied the spray I could almost see the moss starting to turn black instantly, and by the end of the day, it had completely lost its green/yellow colour.
Time will tell how much the spray has killed the moss, but for now, I am satisfied that it was worth doing.
