Starting to repair the Nuffields mudguards

So today Harry asked me to come down to the workshop to make a start on repairing the mudguards for the Nuffield.

The mudguards were badly rusted along the two supports which run from the axle bracket up to the top of the mudguard.

Rather than cutting a pile of patches and then fill all the imperfections with something like chemical metal, I suggested to Harry and his granda that maybe it is better to cut out the full middle section, and keep the original folded edges for an outline.

The first mudguard was badly rotted and did not need much to remove the centre section. Where the mudguard was spot welded along the two supports I broke the tin away using a chisel and hammer.

The second mudguard was not as rusted.

The second mudguard was cut out the same but it was more intact along the two supports and needed quite a lot of heavy chisel action to break the tin away.

These mudguards have done pretty well considering they are 60 years old – the tractor was made in 1964.

After I had removed the centre sections from the two mudguards I grinded back the rust and paint back to bare metal along the edges where I will weld.

We have two sections of heavy tin ready to use for the new centre sections… more updates to come.
